Conocido como “la Cobra”, Parker, quien medía 1.96 metros, hizo su debut en las Grandes Ligas en 1973. A lo largo de su carrera disputó 19 temporadas, 11 de ellas con los Pirates. En 1978 fue nombrado Jugador Más Valioso de la Liga Nacional, logró un título de Serie Mundial con Pittsburgh en 1979 y consiguió otro campeonato en 1989 como parte de los Atléticos de Oakland.
